FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ANSWERED!
AutoFlex has sparked a surge of excitement in the ever-evolving automotive aftermarket, attracting interest from both leading educational institutions and ambitious students. Stepping into something new naturally comes with plenty of questions, and we are committed to providing the answers you need.
Our goal is to dispel any misconceptions and offer clear, insightful guidance, helping individuals fully understand the benefits of an internship experience.
COLLEGES
What will the internships cost us?
Colleges incur no costs, as the automotive industry fully funds the programme through a paid internship.
Will it affect our funding?
The college benefits from improved destination data, as students have a clear career pathway upon completing their course. This not only enhances student outcomes but can also contribute to securing additional funding in the future, as we exclusively support graduates who have successfully finished their studies.
Is there a lot of work involved?
No, there’s no need for concern. Our team of specialists has extensive experience working with both colleges and automotive employers. A major challenge in automotive recruitment is that many colleges lack the right industry connections—but that’s where we come in. Once a college joins the programme, our Academy team provides a comprehensive support pack to help promote the initiative to students. We collaborate closely with colleges to identify suitable learners and share information on relevant opportunities as they arise.
How do we hear about internships opportunities?
After a college joins our programme, our team connects with local automotive employers and keeps the college updated on available internship opportunities. The Academy team then guides learners through the application process, providing support and interview preparation to help them take the next step in their career.
Is it an apprenticeship?
This is a misconception. Our internship opportunity compliments apprenticeships as students don’t repeat learning and instead, apply the skills they have learned at college in the workplace.
Will learners be tempted to become an intern before they qualify?
We only accept students once they have successfully completed their college education.
STUDENTS
What is an internship and what is involved?
Our internship programme is straightforward yet highly effective. We place newly qualified students into garages or vehicle maintenance businesses on a paid internship lasting between 6 and 12 months, depending on their qualifications and chosen career path.
Interns receive a monthly wage, along with all the essential equipment needed to succeed, including a tool kit worth over £1,000, standard PPE, and a uniform. Additionally, they may have access to further training through manufacturer-led courses or approved OEM-standard training providers such as Bosch.
Throughout the internship, each student is assigned a dedicated placement mentor to support them in their daily work, while the Academy team offers continuous guidance. Some of our clients also incorporate additional training, such as Level 3 IMI Electric/Hybrid Vehicle certification or other industry-relevant courses, including ADAS.
Do I get paid during the internship?
Yes, every intern is a paid above minimum wage.
What will it cost me?
There are no costs involved; however, we do expect students to be punctual, appropriately dressed, and fully committed to their internship. To support their success, each student will receive a personal toolbox valued at over £1,000.
What happens after the Internship?
At the end of the internship programme, employers have the option to offer the student a permanent position. If they choose not to, the intern will still have their qualification, along with valuable hands-on experience and additional training—enhancing their prospects of securing another role within the industry.
What level do I need to have achieved?
We are looking for students who are qualified in one of the following:
- Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair – Level 2 or 3
- Motorsport Maintenance and Repair – Level 2 or 3
- Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair – Level 2 or 3
- Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair – Level 2 or 3
- Paint and Body – Level 2 or 3
- Mechanic Electrical Trim – Level 3
- Body Repair – Level 3
- Refinishing – Level 3
These can be either IMI, City & Guilds or ABC Awards qualifications.
Can I do it whilst I am learning?
No, all of our internships are full time positions so the internship is conditional on the student completing their Level 2-3 qualifications.
EMPLOYERS
What will it cost me?
Much like our temporary recruitment model, employers are required to pay interns an hourly rate. While this rate is higher than that of an apprentice, businesses can typically recover their costs within six weeks. Additionally, by the end of the internship, employers will have a fully qualified, brand-loyal, and well-trained workshop team member ready to contribute to their success.
Is there a fee at the end?
No. If the employer decides to take on the intern on a full-time basis, we will waive our recruitment fee.
What training is available?
Bespoke training can be organised for your intern. For more information please get in touch.
How is it different to an apprenticeship?
With apprenticeships, the employer will have a young person with no qualifications, who will need weekly day release to attend college. An intern through us will be over 18 and hold at least a Level 2 automotive qualification, plus they will be a full-time employee.
